Berlin, Germany; Few places on earth have built a more serious relationship with electronic music, fashion, and self-expression. Berlin's club scene has functioned as a cultural institution, and for many people, a way of life. It was on Berghain's floors and the back rooms of boutiques where Liesa Maria Lettau’s story began.
Trained as a custom tailor, Liesa founded Lettau Art Fashion in the city of freedom circa 2012. She always knew she would share her creations with the world based on a simple principle: people should be able to move in her clothes. On the dancefloor. In the jungle. Anywhere.
In an exclusive interview with LILIVANT, Liesa talks about building a slow fashion label from the underground up, the pieces she'd put on Madonna, and why the dancefloor remains the only place that really matters.
How did Lettau Art and Fashion come to life? Tell us about your journey.
Actually, it’s a crazy story. I was learning custom tailoring, but I already knew that I wanted to do my own thing. For me, it was very important that people could dance and move in my creations; climb on trees, or travel on a bus for 12 hours.
I started wearing my first fits at Berghain, where I was almost every Sunday at the time. People noticed my style, and I invited them over to my place to shop. At some point, a friend introduced me to some people who would open a boutique and suggested that I could showcase my collection. From there, things slowly snowballed into an actual business.
So yes, Lettau was really born on the dance floor.
Where do you see your designs being worn? Any styling tips for people buying your beautiful pieces?
Obviously, on the dancefloor, but I also have creations that go well for any occasion. Summer and beach dresses, or wardrobe staples like turtleneck bodysuits and mesh tops that work equally well at the office, date night, or at the nightclub.
It’s hard to give styling tips as all my collection is so versatile. But my go-to for a day at the festival would be a bodysuit (I love Hold Me with the ring the most) combined with a chain skirt or garter belt, cowboy or biker boots, racer glasses, and maybe a hat or visor, and you are good to rave all day.
Also never forget sun screen ;) haha!
If you could dress one person, alive or dead, in one of your outfits and send them somewhere who would it be?
Wow! What an interesting question.
It would probably be Madonna, as she’s the one constant in pop music that I can connect with again and again. She also just released an incredible album with so many songs about the importance of connecting on the dancefloor and putting down our effing phones and stepping away from social media - which I think is so important right now.
Or Marusha, because she was the first female figure in techno I noticed as a little girl, and I immediately thought, “How cool is she!?”.
And where would they go?
Probably to a small illegal rave somewhere in the mountains of Ibiza, far away from commerce and VIP culture. I think that would be pretty cool.
